About APA 7 Referencing
APA 7 (American Psychological Association, 7th edition) is the reference style most widely used in psychology, education, nursing and the social sciences. It uses an author-date in-text citation and a reference list at the end of the document ordered alphabetically by author surname.
In-text citations
APA 7 uses (Author, Year) or (Author, Year, p. X) for direct quotes. For three or more authors, use the first author followed by et al. from the first citation.
Reference list formatting
The reference list is on a new page titled References (bold, centred). Entries are double-spaced with a hanging indent of 1.27 cm. Alphabetise by first author surname.
DOIs and URLs
Include a DOI where available, formatted as a hyperlink (https://doi.org/...). Use the URL only when no DOI exists and the source is online.
Capitalisation
For books and articles, use sentence case for titles. Journal names retain title case and are italicised.
